What makes the regular person so enfatuated with the supercar? The names Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren are as well known as Toyota, Volkswagen or Ford, but why are they so much more revered? Is it the way they look? The way they sound? That they are “fast”? That they are considered unobtainable? Is it simply the badge on the bonnet?
I couldn’t say, though I can appreciate that there is a particular level of allure to your Ferrari, Lamborghini and McLaren. For me, it’s the nth degree of attention to detail paid, the innovative manufacturing methods employed, and the unconventional materials chosen that are some of the reasons why I find these cars appealing in their own way. To do things ‘just because’.
The Vaucluse Car Club has garnered a following for their events which cater to the supercar crowd in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, admittedly the only place where holding events of this nature seems appropriate. In truth it’s different to what I’m used to, but it is refreshing to spot cars in the flesh that you’d normally only see across the cover of Robb Report. Something ticked off the box, I guess. McLaren Senna? Check. Ferrari Roma? Done. Pagani Huayra? You bet. Even the Batmobile seemed tame in a field of this calibre. I’m not joking; there was a rendition from Tim Burton’s 1989 feature sitting by the wayside as people scampered to get photos of [insert supercar here] against the Sydney Harbour backdrop.
